LG Preps 10,000:1 Contrast Ratio Monitor
Contrast ratio numbers often hold as much water as your average sieve, but numbers this high deserve a mention...

10,000:1 on an HDTV would be considered extremely high so when they turn up on a computer monitor it's even more startling. LG's 'W606' is the recipient of this heady figure and is consequently being touted as a genuine alternative for watching high definition videos (students start your engines).
Surprisingly LG hasn't offered up much else other than this stonking statistic, though it will stay true to its cinematic aspirations with an HDMI connector (I'd suspect DVI makes an appearance too). For the record it looks like a 22 incher and therefore a 1680 x 1050 native resolution. Virtually all recent LG displays have had 2ms response times too, so perhaps we should pencil that one in.
With so few details on offer there's obviously no info on release or pricing (and I've done enough speculating for now). That said, with LG announcing last year it wouldn't make monitors with anything less than 5,000:1 contrast ratios I'd be surprised if 10,000:1 isn't soon the new benchmark. Now if only it would become a clearly defined standard...
Update: LG will release the first 10,000:1 contrast ratio monitor in the UK, but it won't be the W606. Instead we are (somewhat disappointingly) getting a model dubbed the 'L197WH' - this is a 19 incher with a 1440 x 900 native resolution, 300 nits brightness, 2ms response time and 170 degree viewing angle. Nice, but... you know... small.
Don't worry bigger models will be on the way soon...
