Asus apresenta Eee PC 900

Amid the buzz of reaching a new milestone of 1 million Eee PCs sold in just 5 months after its launch, ASUS has provided yet another round of excitement with its release of the new Eee PC 900. This new generation of the ever popular PC packs in a whole range of hardware that includes a 8.9 inch widescreen, a 1.3M pixels webcam, the new innovative FingerGlide and 12GB and 20GB storage capacities for Windows and Linux platforms respectively – catering to wider consumer needs while still maintaining the "Easy to learn, work and play" concept by keeping the overall weight under 1kg.

O sucessor do Eee PC foi apresentado oficialmente. As novidades são o ecrã maior (de 7" para 8,9") cuja resolução também aumenta dos 800x480 originais para uns mais usáveis 1024x600; maior capacidade de armazenamento, mantendo o SSD de 4GB mas adicionando 8GB flash na versão Windows e 16GB na versão Linux, para os totais de 12GB e 20GB respectivamente; e a memória que duplica os antigos 512MB do Eee para 1GB no Eee 900.

Outra novidade é a tecnologia "FingerGlide", semelhante à tecnologia "multi-touch" usada pela Apple nos seus novos portáteis, que permite executar algumas funções básicas directamente no touchpad, tal como aumentar ou rodar uma imagem e fazer scroll.

O processador é o mesmo Intel Celeron ULV 900Mhz, mas reduzido de fábrica a 630Mhz para incrementar a autonomia. O utilizador que assim o entender pode repor os originais 900Mhz com software freeware já disponível.

O peso permanece em 1Kg, mantendo um dos factores que o tornou famoso, a portabilidade. Quanto ao outro aspecto da fama, o preço, não desilude, pois tem um preço oficial de 399 euros na Europa.

Como comentário pessoal, escolheria a versão Linux, uma vez que esta corresponde perfeitamente a 90% dos usos de um ultra-portátil desta gama: web browsing, e-reader, MP3, rádio, vídeo (nada de HD, claro), jogos simples e "oldies" (linux também corre ScummVM!), e sempre ganhavam 8GB de armazenamento.

Claro que com o Windows sempre teria o Football Manager...

Já agora, se ponderam a diferença em performance da distro Xandros que vem instalada na versão Linux e o Windows XP Home da outra versão, é praticamente nula:

XP proved only slightly slower to boot than the native Xandros-powered Eee PC – we clocked it at 25 seconds, compared to 20 seconds for Xandros. However, it dropped into standby in a mere three seconds and awoke from its slumber just as fast, whereas the Xandros system needed almost ten seconds for each cycle. This is no doubt due to the extensive development done over many years to make Windows a good OS for mobile computing.

Verdict

Asus has done a brilliant job of updating an already great product. The engineers have clearly listened to all the comments regarding the original Eee PC and attempted to put them right. The 1,024 wide screen makes the Eee PC 900 a joy to use, especially if you spend a lot of your time in a browser window. The extra memory and storage are also very welcome additions, and help make this version of the Eee PC a real alternative to a fully featured notebook.

Yes the price is higher than the previous model, but I personally believe that the Eee PC 900 still represents staggering value for money. Ultimately, if you want a notebook that's small, light and still very affordable, the Eee PC 900 should be top of your list.

Hihi tava msm a espera dexta versao...vamos a ver km está a venda nos UK para mandar vir um...já k a versao 702(ssd 8gb e ecran d 7") ainda n xegou a portugal. Se n sair no mercado UK nos proximos 2meses vou optar pela versao 702.
